Duration: Long Term
Rate: negotiable (depending on experience)
To work as an integral member of the Urgent Care Centre Team, carrying out diagnostic tests, providing health advice and minor treatments; contributing to the delivery of excellent patient care, and the promotion of effective care.
Responsible for management of clinical and general medical stocks, and the safe use and maintenance of medical instruments and equipment.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Contribute to the delivery of the highest possible standard of care by:
- promoting respect and maintaining the individual patient’s rights and choice within the Urgent Care Centre;
- assisting and supporting clients within the Urgent Care Centre as necessary, especially when they are anxious or distressed
- being aware of, and working within, relevant policies and procedures;
- educating patients by raising awareness of health issues
- assisting individuals to locate and use health services and facilities as appropriate;
- ·occasionally, providing cover for Medical Receptionists on Urgent Care Centre reception when short-staffed; ie booking in patients, providing advice and information;
- demonstrate clinical and administrative duties to students attending the Urgent Care Centre for training;
- dealing occasionally with aggressive patients
- Understand and undertake an agreed range of clinical procedures and practices which require a basic level of theoretical knowledge when treating clients at the Urgent Care Centre, e.g.
- under the supervision of a registered nurse, provide health advice and minor treatments, e.g.;wound care, including re-dressings for semi-complex wounds, such as packing cavities; taking wound swabs , removal of sutures/staples;
- autonomously undertake diagnostic tests: e.g. venepuncture, urinalysis and pregnancy testing;
- contact patients’ GPs to facilitate further treatment;
- assist nursing staff or doctor, when necessary, with clinical or administrative duties;
- responsible for the safe use and maintenance of medical equipment,
- monitor and maintain the cleanliness of the environment (eg dressing trolleys, clinical rooms);
- Facilitate maintaining the cold chain.
- safe disposal of Sharps Boxes and Medical Waste;
- contribute to the smooth and effective development and working of clinical teams.
- Establish and maintain collaborative working with colleagues in primary, secondary and social care.
- Maintain and promote effective communication and working relationships with colleagues across the local health economy.
- Maintain effective systems of communication and referral both within the Urgent Care centre and across primary and secondary care.
- Promote and maintain effective comprehensive clinical documentation in accordance with local and NMC guidelines for record keeping.
- Maintain confidentiality at all times in accordance with local and National requirements.
- Demonstrate professional skills in facilitating effective and clear communication
- Possess and demonstrate cultural competence by interacting effectively with clients from many backgrounds.
- Utilise the relevant Trust e-mail communication system.
- Utilise a variety of systems to communicate clinical information in accordance with the requirements of the data protection act (fax, telephone, letter and email)
- Utilise personal skills to facilitate effective and clear communication with clients to ensure collaborative health care concordance with recommended advice and treatment.
- Undertake general duties to maintain stocks and store supplies:
- ·order and maintain and stock check for adequate stocks of drugs, dressings and other consumables storing supplies and drugs in secure designated locations;
- authorised signatory for plain requisition items;
- responsible for ordering and safe storage of medical gases;
- recording and filing details of prescriptions issued under Patient Group Directions

The postholder must not; either during the course of their employment, or following termination of their employment, disclose any information relating to service users or employees, or of the lawful business practices, of the organisation.
The postholder will be required, when and where appropriate to the role, to comply with the processing of requests under the Freedom of Information Act 2000
The postholder must comply with Trust policies that protect the information assets of the organisation from unauthorised disclosure, modification, destruction, inappropriate access or use and must pay due regard to the requirements of the NHS Confidentiality Code of Practice.
The postholder will be responsible for maintaining the clinical and or corporate records that fall within the remit of this role to the standards in Trust records management policies, and data quality processes and standards.
Health & Safety
Compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 – the postholder is required to fulfil a proactive role towards the management of risk in all of their actions. This entails the risk assessment of all situations, the taking of appropriate actions and reporting of all incidents, near misses and hazards, and a statutory duty of care for their own personal safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions.

The Mental Capacity Act 2005 applies to all Trust staff. It is the responsibility of every person to ensure that they keep up to date with the Act and that the delivery of patient care/services is conducted in line with local and national policy and the MCA Code of Practice.

The postholder must attend any training that is identified as mandatory to their role.
