Requirements to practise as a GP in the UK
To work in the UK, there is a set of requirements you must attain:
- License – In the UK, doctors are required to be registered with the General Medical Council (GMC), follow their good medical practice and be subject to their Fitness to Practice actions. We will help you get this license when you register with us. In order to complete your registration you will be required to attend a short interview to obtain approval to sit the I&R MCQ assessment.
- English Language Certificate - To work as a doctor in the UK, you require an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of at least 7.0 in each of the four areas tested (speaking, listening, reading and writing) and an overall score of 7.5.
- Certificate of Eligibility (outside EEA) – for those GPs who were trained outside of the European Economic Area (EEA), a certificate of eligibility is required – the Certificate of Eligibility for GP Registration (CEGPR). How do I become a registered doctor in the UK?
The registration process follows 5 steps:
- Evidence of GMC recognised primary care medical qualification.
- Prove your knowledge of English – IELTS / OET Exam
- Register with the General Medical Council (GMC)
- Pass the MCQ assessment
- Complete the Induction & Refresher (I&R) Scheme
After passing your MCQ assessment and Simulated Surgery - should it be necessary - you will be able to start working as a GP under the supervision and guidance of a senior doctor. On completion of the GP Induction & Refresher Scheme, you’ll be registered on the National Medical Performers List and will be able to practice freely as a GP in the UK.
